How to Persuade Parents to Allow Wearing a Trench Coat

After a series of brutal school shootings, the trench coat became a symbol of mass panic and school violence in some parts of the United States. In fact, trench coats of any kind have been banned from most schools. If you want to start wearing a trench coat but need to convince your parents, here are a few tips to sway them.

1. Understand that wearing a trench may attract negative attention. People will either avoid you (which may be what you're going for), or they may decide that they want to start a fight. Know what you're signing up for before you bring that kind of conflict into your life.

2. Assure your parents that you do not intend to act violently or hurt people, and that you're still the same good kid they know and love.

3. Declare that the trench coat is not a symbol of violence for you. Explain that you equate a trench coat with the goth/punk/emo subcultures, or are really into superheroes and comic books, or you just think it looks cool. Whatever the reason, let your parents see why it's important to you.

4. Prove to your parents that you are intelligent, emotionally stable and mature and they may not care if you wear a trench coat. Keep your grades high and perform all your responsibilities around the house.

5. Don't radically change. If you suddenly behave out of character, arguing with them often or showing signs of indulging drinking, drugs or sex, they might associate the coat with your behavior and start trying to control your wardrobe to control your behavior. Avoid doing these things, and they probably won't care about what you are wearing.
