Step 1
Sign up for a pen pal program. Foreign language teachers in your school may have some information on pen pal programs. The foreign language teacher can help you set up a pen pal. She may even be able to recommend some interesting countries where you may want to find a pen pal.
-
Step 2
Write an introduction letter to your pen pal. Include stickers, coins or other little things in the envelope. It's best to write by hand, but you can also send your pen pal an email. These communications are less personal and you can't include little trinkets in an email. However, when you write the first letter, ask your pen pal if she has a computer and an email address, and then decide which way you would like to write to your pen pal.
-
Step 3
Send some pictures of yourself, your friends and your family to your pen pal and ask him to send back some pictures.
-
Step 4
Write clear, short sentences. This is especially important if your pen pal does not speak the same language as you. You may also want to learn some words and phrases in the language in which your pen pal communicates.
-
Step 5
Describe your culture in your second or third letter. Tell your pen pal all about your country. Tell them about the food, the dress, the music and what people do for entertainment. Ask questions about your pen pal's culture.
-
Step 6
Call your pen pal on the phone to talk in person.
