How to Clean an Electric Lawn Mower

Electric lawn mowers are considered "green" tools because they release no emissions during operation. Maintenance is easy and can be done at home rather than taking the mower to a service center. Keep your electric mower clean to ensure it yields long, productive service.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Prep the device. Unplug the mower from its electrical outlet so you can clean the electric mower safely. Remove the housing that covers the mower's motor so you can get at it.
Step2
Clean the air vent slots for the motor. Brush away any grass or debris so air flow is unobstructed. This keeps the mower's motor from overheating when in use. Use a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly clean out fine sand and dirt.
Step3
Locate the electric mower's two brushes. Clean out any dirt or debris that is sticking to them. These brushes are actually carbon blocks that conduct electricity to the motor. Cleaning allows them to conduct electricity cleanly and efficiently.
Step4
Turn the electric mower on its side. Locate the mower blade and the nut or bolt that holds it in place. Remove the mower blade. Unscrew the blade's nut or bolt. Take the blade out of its housing. Clean any obstructing dirt or debris from inside the blade housing.
Step5
Clean the blade of any dirt or debris that is sticking to it. Make sure the blade is sharp. A dull blade hacks grass rather than slicing it and makes the mower's motor work harder than necessary. This shortens the life of the mower.
Step6
Sharpen the blade if necessary, or completely replace the electric mower's blade.
Step7
Turn the mower right-side up. Replace the mower's electric motor housing.
