Sand gives a rain stick a different look and a great texture. Sand is also inexpensive, since you can usually find it project at the beach, in the local park or in your backyard. Colored sand is available at craft stores or you can make your own (see Resources below).

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glue
  • Sand
  • Wooden skewer
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Cover the rain stick with glue if you're covering the whole stick with sand. If you're making a specific design, draw the design a little at a time with glue.

  2. Step 2

Spread the sand on a piece of cloth or paper that is a little longer than the rain stick. If using more than one color, make a row of sand for each color, spacing the rows about 1/2 inch apart.

  3. Step 3

Roll the rain stick slowly in the decorative sand, completely covering the glue. Use a back and forth motion for each part of the stick until the sand covers it completely.

  4. Step 4

Apply the sand with your fingers, if you have a glue pattern drawn. You can sprinkle the sand on the glue for a raised pattern or pat the sand down if the glue is spread flat.

  5. Step 5

Draw designs on a solid covered rain stick with a wooden skewer or pen cap, once the glue has dried. You can sketch in your name or a picture.

  6. Step 6

Spray the rain stick with hairspray or polyurethane spray once the glue is dry. This helps the sand stick and seals your stick so that you can shake it.
