Decorating a rain stick with felt requires a little more work than coloring it with markers or paint. However, the effect of felt on the rain stick is striking, and, depending on how creative you get, affords you many opportunities to create a beautiful artwork.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the amount of felt you need by wrapping the rain stick with felt and cutting off the excess.

  2. Step 2

Paint your rain stick with craft paint. You can paint the stick all one color or use a variety of colors. Some of the colors will show through the felt, so choose colors that complement or provide a striking contrast with the felt.

  3. Step 3

Fold the felt in half and cut different small shapes on the fold. Continue cutting the length of the fold, or cut only in the middle if you only want paint to show through in the middle of the rain stick.

  4. Step 4

Make 2 more folds on either side of the middle cut-outs. Fold them one at a time and continue cutting designs along each of the folds. When you're done, you should have 3 rows of cut-out designs on the felt.

  5. Step 5

Apply glue to the rain stick, and wrap the felt around it. Your rain stick should have cut-outs all around it, with color showing through, and should resemble a totem pole.

  6. Step 6

Cut out strips of different colored felt, if you don't want your rain stick to resemble a totem pole. Decorate the rain stick by wrapping the felt around, one color on top of the other, for a rainbow effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decorating your stick with thick items will muffle the sounds of rain. The thicker the items, the more muted the sound.
