Things You'll Need:
- Wire cutters
- Pliable wire
- Needlenose pliers
- Flat pliers
-
Step 1
Use your wire cutters to cut a length of wire. The length will depend on the size and type of swirl you want to create. When learning to swirl, it is best to use pliable wire, as it is easier to bend and manipulate. With time, you will be able to craft swirls from thicker wire with ease.
-
Step 2
Grip the end of the wire with the tip of your needlenose pliers and begin guiding the wire around the nose with you thumb. Once you have made one tiny loop, turn the loop flat and grip it with a pair of flat pliers. If you have needle nosepliers with a flat section, they will work best, as the section is generally smooth and will not leave marks on your wire. If not, standard flat pliers will do. However, take care not to squeeze too hard.
-
Step 3
Hold the small loop with the end of your flat pliers and turn your wrist out, bringing your fingers towards your body as you use the thumb of your opposite hand to guide the wire in the opposite direction. Every few centimeters, release the swirl and grip a little more with the pliers.
-
Step 4
Continue swirling the wire until you have completed your desired size. Remember that your swirl can be as tight or as loose as you like. You can then finish with a loop for attaching the swirl to your jewelry, add beads, make swirls in opposite directions with the excess wire or find your own creative touches.
