How to Rotate Toes for a Foot Massage

If you are lucky enough to have received a foot massage, you know just how good it feels and how it can help to relax and relieve tension throughout the entire body. While the toes are an obvious part of the foot, they are often overlooked during a foot massage. A few tips can teach you some techniques for adding the toes into a foot massage.

  1. Step 1

    Get the best access to the toes while supporting the foot by having your client rest face down on the table. Open the legs so that the top of the feet rest near the edge of the table. Lift the first foot and sit gently at the foot of the table, resting the foot on your upper thigh. From this position you can easily perform a variety of foot massage techniques without stressing your own body.

  2. Step 2

    Cup the foot in your hands near the heel so that your thumbs are resting on the bottom of the foot and your fingertips are wrapping around the top of the foot. Warm up the foot by pressing your hands together gently and moving them in a rolling motion.

  3. Step 3

    Press gently and slide your thumbs down the length of the foot towards the big toe. When you come to the toe, add it to the stroke as well, running your thumbs over the bottom of the toe as you hold it from underneath with your fingertips. Give the toe a gentle squeeze and tug, stretching very carefully. Repeat these techniques with all of the toes.

  4. Step 4

    Begin rotating the joints of the toes by supporting the top of the foot with one hand as you use the thumb of your opposite hand to find the base of the toe knuckle. The first rotation is not on the actual toe itself, but the base of the bone which is an inch or two below the toes. Hold the knuckle gently yet firmly between thumb and forefingers and rotate a few times clockwise and a few times counterclockwise.

  5. Step 5

    Move to the toe, gripping again gently yet firmly. With the opposite hand, grip the joint you just rotated. Repeat the same rotations with the toe itself, squeeze and pull very gently and then move on to the next toe.
