There is nothing better than using fresh herbs and spices in your cooking. They make such a difference when it comes to freshness and flavor over their dried counterparts. Enter basil. It compliments so many dishes, like bruschetta for instance. Here is how to prepare basil properly for your next dinner party when you are serving bruschetta.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Chef's knife or cutting board
  • Cutting board
  • Water
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Rinse your basil under your faucet thoroughly. Green leaved lettuces and herbs are notorious for picking up pesticides and bacteria. Give them a good wash.

  2. Step 2

Pat the basil dry with your paper towels.

  3. Step 3

Lay the basil on the cutting board.

  4. Step 4

Roll the basil on itself so that it looks like you are making a little egg roll.

  5. Step 5

Chop up the rolled basil with your chef's knife in small pieces. By rolling the basil, you are chopping several layers at once, saving you a lot of time as you prepare the appetizer. You are now ready to continue with the rest of your bruschetta recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you prepare ingredients for bruschetta, take the time to chop them all at once. It will save you time, as once you are done with your cutting board, it can go in the wash.
  • Basil is the basis for pesto sauce. Tie in your Italian menu by serving bruschetta for an appetizer and a pesto pasta for dinner. It's a cheap and easy way to prepare a great Italian themed dinner party.
  • Watch your fingers when you chop.
