Unfortunately, if a guest wants to walk-out without paying their check, they'll find a way to do it. Your manager may blame you and you won't get the tip you were expecting from that table. In addition, some restaurants require the waiter to pay the tab. But there are some things you can do to help minimize the chance your table will walk out.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Present the check as soon as you can. Don't be rude about it; let them know you'll be happy to add anything else to their bill and tell them to take their time.

  2. Step 2

Be present around your tables. Avoid spending long times in the back chitchatting. Circle your tables every few minutes if possible. If you're helping to close the restaurant, ask another waiter who's cleaning their tables to keep an eye on your guests.

  3. Step 3

Talk to the hostess and your manager, if you're getting the sense a table may stiff you. They can help you keep an eye on them.

  4. Step 4

Speak to your manager about more drastic measures to prevent walk-outs if your restaurant is having a problem with it—especially if they offer patio seating. Some restaurants require that people sitting out on a patio leave their ID or a credit card until they pay the bill.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid making your tables think you want them to leave or that they need to pay the check immediately; your tip may go down.
