How to Handle Rude Job Interviewers

When going to interviews for a new job, you might meet with a rude job interviewer on occasion. While these people may have different reasons for being rude to you, the way you should handle them is the same, unless the interviewer in acting in a way that is illegal.

1. Educate yourself about questions that a job interviewer can and cannot ask during a job interview. Some questions are illegal to ask, so you are well within your rights not to answer them. Some examples are what your national origin is, your maiden name, who you live with, sexual orientation and many others.
2. Know also what questions an interviewer can't ask you during an interview, but can ask you after you are hired. Armed with this information, you will know whether the job interviewer respects laws that govern employers, which says a lot about his personality and way of handling things. These types of questions are not only illegal and rude; your answers may give the interviewer reason to discriminate against you illegally.
3. Realize that some job interviewers are rude on purpose, because they want to see how you react to stress and pressure. Remember to stay calm, be courteous and smile. Whatever you do, don't get upset, yell or be rude yourself. Make it obvious that you are able to stay calm whenever the situation demands it. Employers want people who can handle the job with no problem.
4. Remember that the job interviewer might just be a person with a rude personality. If the person interviewing you for the job is going to be your boss should he hire you, you need to decide whether you would be able to handle this behavior daily.
5. Be aware of possible sexual harassment especially if you are a female, although males do have to deal with this from time to time. Although rare, you might find yourself in an interview with a rude job interviewer that makes inappropriate comments. In this case, it is perfectly fine to state that you are uncomfortable and then leave. This type of rudeness is completely unacceptable.
