Step heels are moving steps that allow you to progress across the floor in tap dancing. Each sound of each portion of the steps must be clean and distinct. It should sound as though you have four feet (almost). You'll find that mastering this technique will stand you in good stead as you advance in tap dancing.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin the step heel across the floor in tap dancing by stepping forward on the ball of your right foot, keeping your heel off the ground.

  2. Step 2

Bring the heel of your right foot down sharply, so it makes a nice, distinct sound.

  3. Step 3

Step forward with the ball of your left foot as you do the step heels in tap dancing.

  4. Step 4

Drop your heel sharply to the ground, making sure the sound is distinct and separate from that of your toe.

  5. Step 5

Do the step heels across the floor slowly at first, making sure that the toes and the heels make clean, sharp sounds that are clearly distinct from each other. Each foot should make two sounds as you do step heels across the floor.

  6. Step 6

Increase the pace of your step heels as you move across the floor in tap dancing. You should sound closer to marking as you "step, heel, step, heel, step heel" with each sound being clearly distinct from the other.
