How to Show Subtle Control With Body Language

Body language is a powerful tool in communication. Practice body language techniques that demonstrate your power and control in business, family and political situations. If power body language makes you uncomfortable, try a subtler approach to show that you are confident and powerful.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your body open. Stand up straight with your arms extended and your head held high. Make your body seem bigger. Thrust out your chin. Place your legs slightly apart. Extend your arms a bit.

    • 2

Approach people directly when you want their attention. Make sure you have someone's full attention before speaking. If you're sitting, move your chair to a position where you'll be equal and can be heard.

    • 3

Get higher by sitting in a higher chair or standing on something higher. Suggest sitting if a person is taller than you.

    • 4

Show subtle displays of wealth or power. Flaunt your expensive pen or watch. Mention your subordinates or secretarial staff.

    • 5

Look someone directly in the eyes without staring at him. Show attentiveness by nodding in response to what he says. Look thoughtful by touching your chin in a thinker's pose. Bite your lower lip to show control and thoughtfulness.

    • 6

Use a firm grip during a handshake. Touch the person on the shoulder or arm during a conversation.

    • 7

Walk with brisk, purposeful strides. When you walk with others, stay in front of them. Guide others through an exit at the end of a meeting.
