Step 1
Approach your horse from the front, as they cannot see behind them and often spook when you approach from the back. Always face towards the rear of the horse when picking up the front hooves, standing shoulder to shoulder. Make sure that you have your hoof pick, brushes and other tools in your pockets or within reaching distance before you begin.
-
Step 2
Stand with your feet about a foot away from the horse's foot so that he cannot step on your toes and then lean your shoulder and upper body against his so that he shifts his weight onto the opposite foot.
-
Step 3
Place your inside hand on the upper inside portion of the horse's leg and lean forward, slowly running your hand down his leg. Stop just above the ankle and squeeze gently as you make a clicking noise. This is the horse's verbal cue to pick up her foot.
-
Step 4
Support the horse's foot as much as possible as you groom the hoof and clean around the shoes. Make sure you do not force the horse to lift his leg any further than he does naturally, as he can loose his balance. Take this opportunity not only to groom the front hooves, but also to inspect the feet for injury.
