Your horse's tail is a symbol of her health and beauty, and requires special care. Just as with your own hair, the hair of a horse's tail can become dry, brittle or break if not cared for properly. A few simple tricks can teach you how to groom your horse's tail to keep the hair healthy and shiny.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Conditioner or detangler (optional)
  • Wide-toothed comb
  • Natural-bristled brush
  1. Step 1

Groom your horse's tail when the hair is dry, as the hair is most more elastic and fragile when wet. You can apply conditioners or other products to the tail after bathing; however, wait to pass the comb and brush until completely dry.

  2. Step 2

Apply a conditioner or detangler to the horse's tail if desired. While these products are made especially for horses, you can use products designed for your own hair as well. Conditioners which contain UV protection are the best choice, as they are designed to be left in the hair and prevent sun damage and bleaching while conditioning and detangling.

  3. Step 3

Stand shoulder to hip with your horse, pulling the tail to the side rather than standing directly behind him where you might get kicked. Hold the tail near the tip and rest the hair on your upper thigh. Pass a wide toothed comb to release any knots or mats from the end of the tail.

  4. Step 4

Separate the tail one strand at a time once you have combed out the tips. Again, begin each section by combing the tips and working up towards the roots. Once you have combed out the entire tail you can finish by passing a natural bristled brush through the tail.
