Step 1
Find an outlet that requires a cover. There are several different types of outlet covers you can purchase. The simple plastic plug-ins are the cheapest, but they are also the easiest for children to remove. The next level of covers has three spots to push to remove it from the outlet. You could also use a cover that slides, but these sometimes require drilling holes into the wall.

Step 2
Push the plug-in into the outlet. Make sure the cover is in the outlet securely. You don't want your child to pull the cover out and stick his fingers in there. The cover requiring you to push all three sides makes it more difficult for your child to remove.

Step 3
Replace the existing faceplate if you decide to use an outlet cover with a spring-loaded sliding cover. You might need to drill new holes for the cover that slides, since the old outlet covers have one hole in the middle. Some spring-loaded covers need holes at the top and bottom.

Step 4
Move furniture or other large, immovable objects in front of the outlets if need be. If children cannot see the outlet, they may be less inclined to explore.
