Sweet, fresh berries are one of the best things about summer, nutritious and packed with flavor. When berry season rolls around again, even babies love to share the wealth, so take a few minutes to prepare some perfect baby-style berries.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Rinse the berries gently in cool running water and remove any stems.
Step2
Put a small amount of water in a saucepan, and bring the water to a boil.
Step3
Place the clean berries in a steamer, and place the steamer in the saucepan of boiling water.
Step4
Put the lid on the saucepan and allow the berries to steam for a few minutes.
Step5
Check the berries often because ripe berries will steam very quickly. When they're soft and tender, remove them from the heat, but reserve the hot water.
Step6
Place the steamed berries in a food processor or blender and blend them until they're pureed. If the berries are too thick, add a tiny bit of the water from the cooking pan. If the berries were very ripe, they may be too thin. If that happens, add a small amount of baby cereal to thicken them.
Step7
Allow the berries to cool before serving them to the baby.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any type of berry makes a delicious snack for babies. Try blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, huckleberries, raspberries, etcetera.
  • Always rinse berries before removing the stems. Otherwise you'll lose delicious berry juice.
  • If you have frozen berries in your freezer, they can be prepared the same way.
