Tape reels may seem like a thing of the past, but they are still one of the best ways to record and store music and radio programs for stations and private aficionados. Unlike CDs and cassette tapes, however, they do require special storage to stay in good condition.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Handle them by the outer edge of the metal tape reel holder or the label portion of the reel only as you get them ready for storage and as you remove them from storage.

  2. Step 2

Wrap tape reels in plastic to store them. Make sure, before you put them in plastic, that there is no dirt or debris in the bag that can damage the tape.

  3. Step 3

Store tape reels in their original boxes, as they are already a proper fit for each reel.

  4. Step 4

Make sure it is flat in its original box. Don't let the plastic or the tape get bunched up in the box, as this can lead to damage to the tape reels themselves, or can cause the tape to bunch or fray over time.

  5. Step 5

Label the reel to reel tapes to ensure you know what each tape holds. When storing many reel tapes at once, this labeling process helps to alleviate headaches in the future.

  6. Step 6

Store tape reels in an upright position. Whether you have a storage unit that has shelves designed for reel tapes, or you are simply placing them in a closet, make sure they are stored in an upright position to help prevent bending the tape by stacking them on top of each other.
