Houseplants improve the air quality in your home. They produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, reducing some of the contaminants in the air during the process. Your houseplants obviously require water, light and nutrition, but regular grooming is also important for optimal health.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Clean cloth
  • Mister
  • Fork or small rake
  1. Step 1

Gather your supplies together in a bin or basket. This way they're available to carry from plant to plant and easy to find when you need them.

  2. Step 2

Remove all of the dead leaves and discard them. Don't leave them in the pot, since they may harbor disease or insects.

  3. Step 3

Clean the leaves with a clean cloth. Dampen it, if necessary, or mist the leaves to loosen the dust and grime. The shower is a good place to spray down larger plants.

  4. Step 4

Clip the brown edges from the leaves with scissors, shaping the leaf to make it look natural. Clean your scissors with alcohol between plants to prevent spreading disease and bacteria from plant to plant.

  5. Step 5

Dust your plants with a feather duster every week to prevent an accumulation of dust between cleanings.

  6. Step 6

Lift the pot from the saucer to make sure it isn't standing in water. Over watering a plant is sometimes more detrimental than not watering it enough.

  7. Step 7

Check for mineral build-up which appears as white residue on the rim or around the bottom of the pot. If there are heavy deposits present, remove the plant and scrub the pot with a stiff brush. Use a weak bleach solution to clean the pot and rinse it thoroughly before repotting the plant with fresh potting soil.

Tips & Warnings
  • According to retired N.A.S.A. scientist Dr. Bill Wolverton, you need one potted plant for every 100 square feet of your home, placed 6 to 8 feet from the area where you work, sleep and relax.
