How to Calculate Area in Square Yards

While walking through your house, you look down and notice that the carpet you once loved has turned dingy or has just become outdated. Instead of hiring someone to replace the carpet, you decide to do it yourself. The first thing you need to do is get the measurement of the room to be re-carpeted in square yards.

• Tape measure
• Calculator
• Pencil
• Paper

1. Make sure the room you are measuring is free of clutter. Move furniture out of the way so you can get a clear and concise measurement.

2. Measure the length of the room. Place one end of the tape measure at the beginning of the wall and pull the other end until you reach the end of the wall. Record the length measurement, in feet, on a piece of paper. For accuracy, take the measurement again.

3. Measure the width of the room. Place one end of the tape measure at the beginning of the wall and pull the other end until you reach the end of the wall. Record the width measurement, in feet, on the same piece of paper. For accuracy, take the measurement again.

4. Multiply the length of the room by the width of the room. Divide the result by 9 to get the square yards of the room. If your result has decimal places, such as 12.67, round up to the next largest number, which in this case, would be 13.
