If you're into home improvement, or even if you are just making a one time update to your home, such as replacing carpet or installing new counter tops, one of the things you must know is how to perform certain calculations. One of the simplest and most frequently used is how to calculate square inches.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Clear the area you are going to be measuring so you can get the most accurate measurement. If it is a counter top, then clear off all of the appliances. If it is a room, then move the furniture to another location. Just make sure whatever area you are working in is clutter free.

  2. Step 2

Use your tape measure to get the length of the area. Place the end of the tape measure securely at one end of the area and stretch it to the other end. Write down the length in inches. Repeat the measurement to ensure accuracy.

  3. Step 3

Measure the width of the area. Place the end of the tape measure securely at one end of the area and stretch it to the other end. Write down the width in inches. Repeat the measurement to ensure accuracy.

  4. Step 4

Multiply the length of the area by the width of the area using your calculator, or if you prefer, do the calculation yourself. The result you get is the area in square inches.
