Making Valentine's Day Mono Prints is an easy, fun activity for Valentine's Day and an inexpensive way to make creative, unique Valentine's Day gifts. All you need are a few supplies and a willingness to get a little messy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper item
  • Valentine's shape
  • Burnishing tool
  • Brayer
  • Printing ink
  • Butcher paper
  • Apron
  • Paper plate
  • Tweezers
  1. Step 1

Gather your supplies. You'll need a paper item on which to create your mono print, like a card, bag or box. You need a Valentine's icon or shape made of sturdy paper with some texture to it, like a small heart-shaped doily. Additionally, you need a burnishing tool or a spoon, a brayer and printing ink, which is stickier and tackier than tempera or acrylic paint.

  2. Step 2

Set up an area where you can make your Valentine's Day mono print. Mono printing is a messy process, so lay down a large sheet of butcher paper on which to work. Wear an apron to protect your clothes.

  3. Step 3

Squirt a large dollop of printing ink onto a paper plate. Roll your brayer through the printing ink until you have covered it completely. You'll know the printing ink is ready to use when it begins to make a crackling sound as you roll your brayer in it.

  4. Step 4

Roll your brayer on the more textured side of your Valentine shape. For this example, we'll assume you chose a small heart-shaped doily. Use your brayer to cover thoroughly the bumpy side of the doily with printing ink.

  5. Step 5

Place your heart-shaped item ink side down on the paper item you're mono printing, like a card. Turn the card over, and use your burnishing tool or the back of a spoon to rub the area where the heart is. Rub in small circles until you're sure you've covered the whole area completely.

  6. Step 6

Turn the card over, and remove the doily. Use tweezers to remove the doily if necessary. You should have a beautiful, textured heart on the front of you card. Allow the printing ink to dry well, then decorate the rest of the card as you wish.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must use printing ink for this project. Tempera, acrylic and other types of paints will not produce the desired result.
