A "Bridge" is the way you form your hand around a cue stick when shooting pool. Whether you're a beginner or on a league, the standard bridge hold--also known as the "Closed Bridge"--is important to master when wanting to shoot a good game.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a cue stick that is right for you. If your stick is too long or too short, you may not be able to position yourself for a good shot.

  2. Step 2

Lay your hand flat on the pool table, and then form a fist. Raise your thumb and index finger and place the cue stick in between them.

  3. Step 3

Wrap your index finger around the cue stick. Place the remaining three fingers-- middle, ring and pinkie-- onto the pool table. Make sure your grasp on the cue stick is firm and the position of your hand stable.

  4. Step 4

Move the cue stick back and forth to align your shot. Maintain stability while preparing to shoot. Adjust the arch of your standard bridge hold higher or lower depending on the angle of your aim.

  5. Step 5

Practice your standard bridge hold. Make adjustments to your hold as necessary to improve your shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Another standard bridge hold is the "Open Bridge," which can be achieved by not wrapping your finger around the cue stick, but placing the cue stick in between the thumb and index finger and aligning the cue for your shot.
  • When you're ready to improve your game, you can move onto other bridge holds.
