The primary responsibility of a defensive end in football is to control the edges on the line of scrimmage and attack the quarterback. Michael Strahan continually demonstrates this ability. He holds the NFL single-season sack record, but also plays the edges of the line for the run as well as any player.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Maintain the outside edge on a running play. On running plays, the defense must not let the running back get outside of them. If the opposing team is running the football, Strahan can turn the runner back to the inside and into his teammates.
Step2
Blast off the edge towards the quarterback on a passing play. Strahan set the single season sack record by doing just that. He uses his speed to get outside of a blocker before they have a chance to react.
Step3
Use your hands to control the blocker on the edge of a play. Strahan uses a swim move with his hand speed to get past the blocker. He also controls the blocker with his hand strength, and then plays off the block to make the tackle. Fast and strong hands are essential for a defensive end to control and attack the edges of the offense.
Step4
Utilize proper footwork and balance to maintain your position on the edge. Strahan plays on the edges as if he is dancing with the opposing blocker.
