Although you'll need to find a safe place for your larger valuables, a small wall safe constructed from an electrical outlet is perfect for smaller items such as coins or jewelry. You can make your own hidden wall safe in less than 45 minutes, at a cost of about two dollars.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 electrical wall faceplate, single gang
  • 1 15-amp, 120 volt residential grade receptacle
  • 1 single gang cut-in box
  • Roofing nails and washers
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pencil
  • Pliers
  • Drywall saw
Step1
Enlarge the holes in the cut-in box so that you can easily slide in roofing nails.
Step2
Remove the mounting screws from the receptacle and slide it in the cut-in box.
Step3
Slide the washers over the roofing nails, and put the roofing nails into the cut-in box.
Step4
Attach the faceplate with a screwdriver. The faceplate should slide easily in and out of the cut-in box.
Step5
Place the open end of the cut-in box on the wall and use the pencil to trace around it.
Step6
Cut a hole in the wall with a drywall saw.
Step7
Place the cut-in box in the hole and tighten the screws. Hide your small treasures in the box and replace the faceplate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a larger hidden wall safe by using double gang wall faceplates or tripe wall gang faceplates, with appropriate cut-in boxes.
  • It's a good idea to place your hidden wall safe in a place where it won't be easily noticed, such as behind a piece of furniture or other large item.
  • Use a faceplate that matches the other faceplates in your home.
