Taking influence from both ballroom dancing and 16th century European folk dance, the term "country dance" is now used to describe a variety of styles. From circle dancing to square dancing, all country dancing styles have a few basic steps in common. With just a few simple tops you and your partner can begin practicing the country dance toe-out and promenade today.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the toe-out and promenade as a basic transition step when dancing the two-step in country dance. Begin in the basic dancing form, face to face with your partner. Place your left hand on your partner's shoulder as he places his hand at your waist. Place the palms of your free hands together.

  2. Step 2

Begin by stepping backward with your right foot, your partner leading you back as he steps forward with his left foot, moving to the beat of the music.

  3. Step 3

Take four steps, turning slightly to your left on the fourth step. Maintain your hold on your partners hand throughout the entire country dance transition. As you step out to the left, move your hand a bit further behind your partner's back as he extends his arm further around your waist.

  4. Step 4

Step your toes out to the left on the fifth step, both you and your partner, and hold for one beat to transition smoothly into promenade. You should now be dancing hip to hip with your partner, hands joined between you. Take four more steps forward together to complete the toe-out transition to promenade.
