Step 1
Determine what you want to use to create your fake blood. Corn syrup blends more easily into clothing, whereas gelatin doesn't absorb as easily into the fabric. Corn syrup or sugar based syrup versions can get sticky, so consider your options before you apply your fake blood.
-
Step 2
Apply fake blood conservatively. Less is more for a zombie costume because you want to highlight the original zombie makeup, making the costume look more creepy and undead than gooey and blood soaked. As a rule, keep blood on the clothing in proportion to how much blood is on the face makeup.
-
Step 3
Grab your zombie costume a day or so before the big event. Lay down some newspaper or a drop cloth so that you don't splatter fake blood across the room. Begin adding your fake blood mixture to your costume in layers, letting each layer dry before you add more.
-
Step 4
Use a brush to apply blood for easy blending and so you can control where your fake blood will go. If you are looking to create an effect for blood spatter dab the brush around using the tip in some areas, and smearing it in others.
-
Step 5
Consider limiting the fake blood to the areas around the neck and chest or tops of sleeves of your costume. Putting fake blood all over your clothing can lead to fake blood getting all over chairs or other people, which could cause permanent staining.
-
Step 6
Give your zombie costume plenty of time to dry before you wear it to prevent smearing and rub-off. Hit the finished product with a blow dryer or finish with a dusting of powder to help further prevent unwanted smearing and transferring right before you leave.
