Step 1
Ensure your bicycle is the right height. Those who are just learning to ride, whether they're children or adults, should get a bike that's a bit too small for an optimal ride. When you sit on the bike's saddle, your feet should rest flat on the ground.
-
Step 2
Lean the bike toward you if your seat is high or swing your leg over the back if it's comfortable for you to do so. Make sure you don't pull a muscle swinging your leg over the bike; better to lean the bike than hurt yourself.
-
Step 3
Leave your kickstand down while you mount, if your bike has one. Once you're ready to ride, use your foot to kick the stand into its up position. If your bike doesn't have a kickstand, leave one foot on the ground until you've sufficiently balanced yourself.
-
Step 4
Insert the toes of your shoes, one at a time, into the toe clips on your pedals, if your bike has toe clips. If not, position your feet on your peddles so that the edge of the pedal meets the part of your foot where your arch begins.
-
Step 5
Push off slowly and make sure you balance yourself properly. Begin pedaling and enjoy your ride.
