Punk fashion began in the 1970s as a music genre. It later evolved into a fashion style and way of making a statement. People usually viewed those who were punk as rebellious and shocking. The punk style involves both clothing and hair. Follow these steps to grow punk hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair color
  • Hair glue or hairspray
  • Flat iron
  • Hair care products
  1. Step 1

Understand that there is not just one punk hairstyle. Generally, the wilder and crazier the hair is, the better. Usually, hair is asymmetrical and involves colors that could never be natural.

  2. Step 2

Grow your hair to the length you need for the way you wish to style it. If you are unsure about exactly what you want to do, search the Internet for ideas, or visit a hair salon and look through hairstyle magazines and books that they have on hand. The classic punk hairstyle is the mohawk, but of course, that isn't for everyone.

  3. Step 3

Get your hair colored. You can color all of your hair, or only pieces of it. Remember that unnatural colors are only semi-permanent, so you will have to reapply the color often, or simply change the color when it washes out. These colors probably won't show up at all on dark hair, so you might have to get it lightened or bleached out if you want to color it pink, orange or some other unnatural color. Consider going to a beauty salon to have this done to get the best results.

  4. Step 4

Choose a hairstyle. Girls and guys alike can have it as short or long as they wish. Spiked hair is very punk, while most punks don't have long hair. It is difficult to make your hair do crazy things with all that weight. Consider getting an asymmetrical haircut. For example, the left side may be longer than the right, the front longer than the back, or parts of your head shaved.

  5. Step 5

Use hair glue or a very strong hairspray that you spritz on the hair to style your hair and get it to keep its crazy shape. For best results, don't use aerosol hairspray. If you need very sharp-looking spikes, use a flat iron after you apply a holding product.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use UV protective shampoo and conditioner. Proper hair care is vital because the products and styling tools you need to maintain punk hair will damage it.
