Step 1
Replace the traditional straight arms with crossover arms, or move them above your head or down by your sides. Changing your arm movements is one of the easiest changes you can make to alter the dance but keep the more difficult leg positions the same. Try various positions to keep it changing.
-
Step 2
Speed up or slow down depending on the type of music you are listening to. Just by moving quicker or slower to certain parts of the music, you can make a unique set of moves and keep the basic running man steps. Stand still like a statue, then start again for extra effect.
-
Step 3
Change direction to perform the "Roger Rabbit," which is basically the same as the running man but you step backwards with your right leg, then your left and slide forwards. This looks really robotic, but you can alter direction, then change back with different parts of the music to create a whole new version of the dance.
-
Step 4
Keep one half of your body doing the regular steps but change the other half by doing a different arm move, such as bent, then put above your head. You can keep the leg the same or change it. It takes a lot of practice to move body parts independently, but you can create loads of different combinations.
-
Step 5
Practice your new moves in the mirror at home before you take them out to the dance floor. It's great to improvise when the mood takes you but you don't want to look like an idiot in public. Have fun seeing what works and doesn't work in private first.
