Muay Thai offers the practitioner fast blocks, punches and kicks to help them outwit any opponent. The horizontal elbow strike offers a combination of a defensive move and a strike. It is a good idea to practice this move on a gymnastic mat or other soft floor covering in case of a fall. A partner is not necessary for practice.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the right leg bent slightly and behind you and the left leg straight and in front with the arms raised. The arms should be bent at the elbow and hands held in fists up in front of the chest. This is a defensive stance and the best position to begin a strike.

  2. Step 2

Raise the right arm up to the right side of your own head in a defensive block. Bend the right arm at the elbow and the fist covering the ear. Complete Step 2 simultaneously with Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Bring the left elbow in front of your face as you twist your body to the right. The left side of your body is now both shield and platform for attack. With the left knee bent to offer support for the twisting body, the right leg should be much straighter but still behind you and the right hand is at the top of your head. You are performing the elbow strike.

  4. Step 4

Alternate the attack by placing the left hand in a defensive block and attacking with the right elbow. The elbow sweeps across the body as it both shields and strikes at the same time.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the move several times learning to twist, block and elbow strike at the same time. Introduce the technique into sparring sessions or as part of a move demonstration or workout.
