How to Make a Sock Cover for an iPod

A sock cover is an easy and cheap way to protect your iPod from scratches and other damage. If you're feeling especially creative or crafty, you can even knit your own sock cover, although any old sock will do. With just a few steps, you'll have a great cover that's personalized for you.

    Things You'll Need

    • Sock
    • Sewing kit
    • Buttons (optional)

Find a sock to use as your sock cover. You may want to use one that has lost its mate or buy a new one in a color or pattern that you like. You can even knit or crochet your own sock if you want to.

Measure your iPod and cut the sock to size accordingly. Leave a little room at the top, particularly if you want to hem up the edge.

Cut holes in the sock if you want to expose the dial or scroll button and screen. Remember to measure where the holes must go before you begin cutting. If you have a fabric that is prone to stretching, you'll want to make holes a little smaller than you would with less stretchy fabric. Cutting the holes is optional as many people like to use the sock cover as a drop-in holder.

Hem up any exposed edges if you want to prevent unraveling. If you cut holes for the screen, you'll want to turn back these edges as well. You may want to use a needle and thread or other options for hemming.

Sew a button or two onto the cover. Buttons make a great item to wrap your headphone cords around to keep them out of the way and untangled. Choose a large button that you like and sew it to the center of the sock cover or take two buttons and put one toward the top and the other toward the bottom.
