How to Make Plasma From Baking Soda and Water

Plasma is one of the states of matter. Plasma, however, is hard to define, as it resembles a solid, a liquid and a gas. To make a substance resembling plasma, all you need is baking soda and water. You can easily make plasma at home or in a science class at school. Follow these steps to make plasma from baking soda and water.

Things You'll Need:

• 2 cups baking soda powder
• 2/3 cups tap water
• several drops of food coloring

1. Place two cups of baking soda powder into a plastic container that comes with its own lid. Place the lid on the container and shake the baking soda well for at least five minutes.

2. Transfer the baking soda to a large bowl.

3. Pour the tap water into the baking soda slowly. Stir the mixture with a spoon while adding the water.

4. Continue to stir the baking soda and water mixture with a spoon until no more powdered baking soda is visible.

5. Add a few drops of the food coloring of your choice to color the plasma. Stir well with a spoon to distribute the color.

6. Remove the plasma from the bowl and play with or use in a classroom as desired.

Tips & Warnings

• To make a larger quantity of plasma for a science class, just increase the quantities of baking soda and water keeping the baking soda to water ratio the same. Follow all steps as above.
• Making plasma can create a mess. Be sure to protect your work area. Newspapers work well as protection.
• Do not eat the plasma.
