The next time you need a quick but meaningful gift for family members, teachers or friends, make a handful of bookmarks. By following the steps below and personalizing each one to suit the favorites and personality of the recipient, you will create a practical trinket they will always treasure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tagboard or chipboard
  • Cardstock
  • Patterned paper
  • Scissors
  • Adhesives
  • Photos and memorabilia
  • Pens
  • Rubber stamps and ink
  • Stickers or rub-ons
  • Embellishments
  • Hole punch
  • Eyelet and setter
  • Ribbon, string or floss
  • Charms
  1. Step 1

Trim a piece of tagboard, chipboard or heavyweight card stock into a long rectangle. Although you can cut the bookmark into any shape you desire, the traditional rectangle will allow the recipient to use it with books of any size.

  2. Step 2

Layer the front with coordinating card stock or beautiful, cute or funky patterned paper. Use colors and motifs that you know your friend will love. Add a nostalgic touch by adding tiny photos (try a gathering of shots snipped from an index print), ticket stubs or clippings of favorite bands and celebrities.

  3. Step 3

Adorn the bookmark with a meaningful quote, song lyric or inspirational message. Use rubber stamps, sticker letters, alphabet rub-ons or pens. Consider adding the date, your signature and a personal note on the back of the bookmark.

  4. Step 4

Embellish with stickers, small die cuts, paper flowers or buttons. Add bling with sequins, metallic accents and gems. Be sure the bookmark's accents are flat enough so the recipient can still close the book easily.

  5. Step 5

Punch a hole at the top and thread ribbon, torn fabric or several strands of string or embroidery floss through as a tassel. For a professional look, reinforce the hole with a colorful metal eyelet that coordinates with the bookmark. You can also dangle a charm, acrylic or chipboard shape from the ribbon as a playful touch (see Resources, below).
