How to Make Glow Jars

Glow jars are a great addition to any Halloween or blacklight party. You can make a number of them and set them around the room as eerie glowing accents to the decorations. They're easy to make and can be made ahead. All you need is a jar, highlighters and a blacklight to make the highlighter ink become florescent.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Jar
    • Warm water
    • Highlighter
    • Blacklight
      • 1

Fill a jar with warm water. Warm water rather than cold will help get the most ink out of the highlighter cartridge.

      • 2

Cut the highlighter apart until you get to the center with the ink cartridge. Make sure to do this step carefully so that you won't accidentally cut yourself.

      • 3

Make slits in the thin plastic coating that is on the highlighter cartridge. This will let the ink out of the cartridge.

      • 4

Place the cartridge in the jar of water and allow it to soak for several hours. You want to get the most ink you can out of the cartridge.

      • 5

Remove the cartridge from the water and place a lid on the jar.

      • 6

Place the jar near a blacklight, turn the light on and the liquid will light up.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can make these jars a day or two ahead of time. When you need to use them, simply mix or shake them up to redistribute the highlighter ink and set them out.

    • Use several different colors of highlighter to make different colors of glow jars. You can also mix colors to make a different color or shade of water for the glow jar.

    • Do not consume the water and highlighter mixture. The ink is toxic.
