How to Communicate With Your Massage Therapist

Massage therapy is a chance for you to relax, release tension and heal sore, tired muscles. However, to get the best benefits you must know how to communicate successfully with your therapist. While many people feel timid during a massage, your therapist is not a physic, so any verbal help you can give them will maximize your experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to your therapist about your needs and expectation before the massage begins. Most therapists will begin with a short interview. This is your chance to communicate how deep you like your massage, what areas you would rather not have worked and what needs the most attention. Remember that your massage is for you, so make sure your therapist knows exactly what you need.

  2. Step 2

Discuss any medical conditions you might have before beginning your treatment. While massage is a very gentle form of healing, some medical conditions require special care. Your therapist is trained to cater to your medical needs; however, lack of communication before hand can complicate matters later.

  3. Step 3

Take note of little details, as proper communication during a massage is not limited to the bodywork itself. If you would like more or less light, different or no music, if you feel hot or cold you should tell your therapist as soon as possible. Your comfort is the most important part of your therapy.

  4. Step 4

Let your therapist know how the pressure is during the massage. Whether the pressure is just right, too deep or too soft, communicate so that she knows what works for your. Additionally, if your therapist leaves an area too soon, speak up. Many therapists have a standard routine for their sessions and will happily adapt so that you feel satisfied at the end of the massage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be shy. Massage therapists are accustomed to working with a variety of people, personalities and needs. While therapists are generally highly intuitive people, only you have the power to make the massage perfect.
