How to Know if You Want to Become a Pastor

Becoming a pastor is one of the most life-changing decisions you can make. It takes a special purpose and calling from a higher power to take on this type of commitment and lifestyle. Before becoming a pastor, you need to determine if you possess the characteristics to be a pastor and if you truly feel your heart is calling you to this profession.

1. Determine if you feel God has called you to become a pastor. Ask and listen for Him to answer. Listen for the still quiet voice like Elijah. Listen for an audible voice like Samuel. Listen for a godly friend's voice encouraging you. Listen for God everywhere you go and weigh whether it is truly from God.
2. Lay down your life. Becoming a pastor may mean abandoning your dreams. Be willing to lay them at the cross. Be willing to follow God wherever he may take you and whenever He says to go. Determine if you are ready to forsake all.
3. Yearn to help others. Pastors have a heart for the lost and the saved. They have the patience to stick by a person in and out of the church. Have compassion on God's people no matter who they are or where they come from. Determine if you have the patience to love the loveless and the hated.
4. Enjoy reading your Bible and spending time with God. An important part to following anyone is that you know who you are following. Have a true revelation of what God has done for you and in you. Know who you were and who you are now because God changed you. Enjoy reading the Bible and the peace it brings to many.
5. Express love--love of life, love for yourself and love others. Love the fresh air. Have love written on your face. Pastor's are loving people. They are the shepherds who will go after one lost sheep.
