Step 1
Stand with your feet together. Keeping your heels together, pivot your toes out to each side. This is first position. If you have done first position correctly, your toes should be turned out at a 45-degree angle from your heels.
-
Step 2
Select the working foot, or the foot that will be executing the chosen dance move or direction. Extend the working foot to the side to complete second position. Your foot should be at a 90-degree angle directly from the direction you are doing the move or step. For a second position aerial, do the same position as second, but lift the working leg.
-
Step 3
Shift the weight on one standing leg and place the working foot in front of the standing leg for third position. The inside of each foot and ankle should be exposed, your feet turned out 90 degrees. Place the toe of the working foot to the hollow of the standing foot with your feet turned out to stand in third position.
-
Step 4
Add the additional variations to third position. For third position aerial, follow the directions in Step 3 and simply raise the working foot along the standing leg. Third position rear mirrors regular third position with the working toe touching the back heel. Third position rear aerial simply lifts the working foot up the back of the standing leg.
-
Step 5
Determine the direction of the next step and stand with the working leg extended in front of the standing leg. For fourth position, both heels should be in line with the direction of the next step and the working foot will be at a 45-degree angle from the heel of the working foot.
-
Step 6
Raise the working foot for fourth position aerial and prepare to incorporate intermediate foot placement for the routine. Fourth position intermediate uses the same position as basic fourth position, except the working leg is extended diagonally in the direction of the step at a 45-degree angle.
