Salsa may be the most popular form of Latin American dancing, combining a number of different styles to create unique and sexy dance steps. Salsa is also considered one of the most difficult dance forms; however, with a few simple tips you can begin practicing the open release and turn, a common step in salsa dancing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Face your partner and join hands. The man's left hand should be placed into the woman's right hand while the opposite hands grip lightly at the upper arms near the shoulder. Hold your hands up high so that your upper arms are parallel to the ground. Elbows should be bent slightly to leave about 1 1/2 feet between your bodies.

  2. Step 2

Lead your partner, stepping forward with your left foot as she takes a step back. Step your right foot in place, your partner mirroring your moves and then step back again with your left foot. Repeat the quick-quick-slow rhythm with your right foot, taking a step back as your partner steps forward. Step in place with your left foot as your partner mimics and then step your right foot back to the beginning position.

  3. Step 3

Repeat the basic salsa forward step with the open release, continuing the quick-quick-slow pattern. As you begin the forward step, release your left hand as your partner drops his right. Turn out toward your open hands.

  4. Step 4

Begin the salsa backward step as your partner turns under your arm. Step slightly to the side, allowing her room to cross in front of you and lift your joined hands high. She should cross under your arm and turn counter-clockwise, returning to face you on the first beat of the next forward step.
