Krav Maga is not so much a martial art as it is a battle technique developed and used by the Israeli military. Krav Maga is gaining popularity in the United States as an effective form of self-defense, and can be used to counter any other fighting technique. A few tips can teach you how to defend against a side choke.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Defend yourself using the Krav Maga side choke defense when your attacker has pinned you to the ground and is holding your throat with both hands.

  2. Step 2

Bring your left hand up and grip the attacker's right wrist firmly. Pull his wrist to the side as you bring up your right leg. Force your knee and shin to the attacker's chest and push out, creating some space between you and him. This will force him to extend his arms, weakening his grip.

  3. Step 3

Lift your left leg up and over the attacker's right arm and kick forcefully with the heal of your foot. The impact should meet with the attacker's jaw, forcing him backwards. As you complete the kick, the attacker should release the choke enough that you can counter attack or escape.

  4. Step 4

Use this opening to roll your body quickly to the left. Be prepared to defend yourself further, particularly if your kick is not forceful enough completely stop your attacker. At your first opportunity, run to safety and call for help.

Tips & Warnings
  • A kick to the jaw can cause serious injury to your attacker. Only use this and other Krav Maga techniques when absolutely necessary.
