There is nothing better than a homemade cake straight from the oven. But if you've ever made a cake, then you know that checking to see if it is done can be a tricky proposition. Here are some tips on how to check to see if you have baked a sheet cake correctly.

From Quick Guide: Baking Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toothpick
  • Oven mitts
  1. Step 1

    Put your oven mitts on.

  2. Step 2

Open the oven door slowly. Be sure to stay back from the oven door, as there will be a release of heat the moment you open it. You don't want to scorch your face.

  3. Step 3

Pull the sheet cake out slowly so that it is partially exposed.

  4. Step 4

Stick your toothpick in the center of the cake and then remove it.

  5. Step 5

Look at the toothpick. If it is clean, then the sheet cake is done baking. If there is still batter on it, then it needs a few more minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are in a pinch and don't have a toothpick, you can try the hand method. Instead of placing a toothpick inside, gently press down with your hand on top of the cake. If it feels firm and springs back up, then it is done. If the cake stays slightly indented and is spongy, then it needs a few more minutes.
  • Always set a timer for your cake. Set the time so that it goes off a few minutes before what the recipe calls for. That way you can check the cake to see if it's done. If you overdo a cake and it comes out dry, there's no way to fix it.
