The number one hazard of the bunk beds is the top bunk. Sometimes railings aren't up to standard, the beds are too high, or there may be life threatening falls from the beds. All bunk beds come with a ladder from the manufacturer. Second hand and homemade bunk beds may not have a ladder. Here is how to get up to the top bunk of a bunk bed.

From Quick Guide: Sleep Tight: Kids' Beds
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the ladder. This may not be the coolest way for a child who thinks he's a monkey to swing up onto the top bunk, but it is the safest. Use the ladder that came with the bunk bed or contact the manufacturer for details on how to order a new one. If one is not available, move on to Step 2.

  2. Step 2

Stand at the head or foot of the bed. Place one foot on the head board or foot board. Hold on to the highest point you can comfortably reach. Pull yourself up and place your next foot on the top bunk's head or foot board. Swing your free leg over the side of the foot board to arrive on the top bunk.

  3. Step 3

Position yourself at the side of the bed near the head or foot board. Step on the lower bunk's mattress. Hold on with both hands to the upper bunk's guard rail. Step up on the inside of the head or foot board. Pull yourself up and place your free knee on the top bunk's mattress.

  4. Step 4

Recruit another person to help you. Have one person remain on the ground and place their hands, fingers locked together, palms up to help you up. The second person should step into the person's hands with one foot. The helper should then use his back and stand up and thrust the person up toward the top bunk.

Tips & Warnings
  • Step 4 is similar to helping a person up onto a horse.
  • Follow all manufacturer instructions for safety.
