Step 1
Listen to your parents when they talk to you. It may seem like a simple thing to do, but often times kids get busy or distracted and stop listening to their parents or acting concerned by what their parents say. Give your parents feedback (verbal and nonverbal) to let them know you're listening.
-
Step 2
Seek out your parents for advice and conversation. Parents get busy too, so even if your parents don't ask you about important areas of your life, initiate a conversation yourself to ensure that your parents know what is important to you.
-
Step 3
Obey your parents' rules and requests. Respect any rules your parents have or chores that you have to do, and if you're unable to do the chores or follow the rules because of some extenuating circumstance, let your parents know as soon as you can and explain that your failure to obey the rules was involuntary or unavoidable. Emphasize that you respect the rules and understand why they exist.
-
Step 4
Help your family. Whenever you can, help your parents by offering to assist with household work or talk about problems. Support of family members is a wonderful blessing for adults as well as kids.
-
Step 5
Spend leisure time with your family. Get to know your parents and what kinds of hobbies they enjoy, and you might just find that you have a lot in common.
-
Step 6
Make decisions that are good for your health and happiness. Above all, most parents just want to make sure that their children are safe and happy, so try to take care of yourself and your parents will almost always respect and love you for it.
