1
Think about the look you would like your readers to see. Go to the library and research the different styles of newspapers or newsletter. Talk to writers and publishers to see what they like or don't like.
-
2
Start the computer. Let the computer warm up and open a desktop publishing program. A couple of professional desktop publishing programs are QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign. Most newspaper or newsletter layouts are designed on a Macintosh computer but with additional software can be designed on a PC.

3
Center the newspaper or newsletter name and logo along the top of the front page in large, bold letters. On each consecutive page the name should be smaller in regular type.
-
4
Decide what the most important article will be, then the next, etc. Each article should have an eye-catching title that will pull the reader into the article. The title must be larger type than the actual article type. Try to keep the entire article on the same page if you can.
-
5
Add photos or graphics to the article. Keep the photos small in size but still readable. Put a caption under each photo so the reader knows what they are looking at.
-
6
Have someone else review your layout. Proof headlines, spelling and articles to make sure they flow smoothly. Correct any errors, do any rewrites or make changes as needed.
-
7
Send the newspaper or newsletter to the printer.
