How to Remove Staples

Many office workers hesitate to use staples because removing them often tears the paper. Instead, they rely on paper clips, which can get entangled when they come in contact with each other. However, choosing the right staples and the proper use of the stapler and staple remover can prevent these problems.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Stapler
  • Staple remover
  • Staples
  • Paper

Step1
Fill your stapler with the right kind of staples. The best kind are the chisel point staple, which penetrates the paper more easily and are less likely to jam in the stapler.
Step2
Buy a stapler with a movable metal plate on the bottom. In one position, the stapler will bend the staple ends toward the center, resulting in a very secure staple. Turned the other way, the staple ends will bend outward, making them easy to remove. If you anticipate having to remove the staple later, bending the end outward will allow you to remove the staple cleanly with your fingers.
Step3
Remove an inward bent staple by first using the staple to remove to straighten the ends. A pinch-style remover will straighten both ends at once, but can tear the paper if not used carefully. A blade-style remover will require you to straighten each end separately, but will not tear the paper.
Step4
Use the staple remover on the other side of the staple to remove it. You will be left with only two small holes in your paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you still don't want to use staples, you can use a staple-less stapler, which will crimp the papers together. If you find stapling difficult, try a gun-style stapler, which requires minimum effort.
