How to Restrict Web Browsing Using Internet Explorer

Parenting takes on a whole new twist in the technological age. Developers promote games for young children and kids in elementary school are already in chat rooms. This opens the door for unwanted images, potentially harmful human contacts, and viruses that can harm your computer. The content advisor from Internet Explorer gives you a free tool to restrict your child's Internet access.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Click "Help" at the top of your Internet Explorer page then hit "About Internet Explorer." Make sure you have IE 6 or higher; download the current version of Internet Explorer if you have an older version.

  2. Step 2

    Close the version box and select "Tools" from the top of the Internet Explorer page (right next to "Help") then choose "Internet Options." Look at the headings and click on the one that says "Content," then select the "Enable" option.

  3. Step 3

    Read through the categories looking for topics you want to restrict and highlight the ones on which you want to check the ratings. Move the slider to your desired rating. Remember that the further right you push it, the more lenient the rating.

  4. Step 4

    Select the "Approved Sites" tab once your are done with the ratings step. This step overrides the ratings guide for specific sites allowing you to restrict or accept websites.

  5. Step 5

    Set up an administrator password in the "General" tab by selecting "Create Password" in the "Supervisor Password" box. When you complete all these steps, click "OK."
