Trying to remove a trapped sink stopper can be frustrating. You try and try to pull at the stopper, but it just doesn't want to budge. Instead of pulling out the stopper with a knife, which may cause you to accidentally cut yourself, try this tactic.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put on a pair of kitchen gloves. Sink stoppers have a tendency to get gross due to build up from food, soap, hair and other debris. Protect your hands with a clean pair of rubber gloves.

  2. Step 2

Remove any water from the sink. You'll have a difficult time removing the trapped stopper with water in the way. Bail out the water if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Unscrew the cap of the sink stopper. Once the cap's completely removed, place it safely to the side. You don't want to lose any of the pieces.

  4. Step 4

Place your finger inside the opening. After the cap is off, you should be able to get a finger inside of the drain. Lift up with your finger to remove the trapped sink stopper.

  5. Step 5

Replace the cap. Before you put the stopper back into the sink, screw the cap back onto it.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you still can't get the trapped stopper out of the sink, you can use it without the cap. However, you'll have to screw back the cap every time you want to fill up the sink with water.
  • Never try to pry the sink stopper out of the drain with a knife, fork or other utensil. You can end up bending the utensil without successfully removing the stopper.
