How to Flip up From the Ground to a Standing Position

Flipping from the ground to a standing position is also known as "kipping up." It's not a very useful move in real life, but the kip-up has appeared time and time again in countless kung fu films and action flicks. There are number of different techniques you can use to accomplish the maneuver, but they're all acrobatic and explosive.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay flat on your back. Flipping yourself up from a twisted position on the ground can lead to back injuries and turned ankles.

    • 2

Place your hands against the ground so they're next to your head and pointing toward your shoulders. It's an awkward position, so it'll take a bit of twisting to reach.

    • 3

Bend your legs at 90-degree angles and draw them up toward your chest. They don't have to be pressed against your upper body, but you at least need them off of the ground to generate momentum for the kip-up.

    • 4

Thrust your legs into the air and uncoil your body. Use your hands to push your upper body off of the ground.

    • 5

Let your back arch naturally as your feet touch the ground. As soon as they hit, tighten your abs and back to pull your torso into an upright position and finish the move.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice kip-ups on cushioned surfaces like carpet and grass before trying it on wood or concrete.

  • Be sure to let your legs fall underneath your body before they touch the ground. This helps you stay balanced.
