When you have long hair you're always looking for new ways to braid, twist and curl it to add variety to your style. A rope braid, or rope twist, is a new way to braid your hair to keep it tidy and give you an interesting look. The two strand rope braid is a quick style that you can wear as one large braid or multiple small ones.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather your hair into thick ponytail at the back of your head. Secure it with a band or hair tie and divide the ponytail into two even sections.

  2. Step 2

Twist both sections clockwise to tighten them. Wrap the right section counter clockwise over the left, making sure both strands are still tight but not hurting your head. Move your hands back to their original position, being careful not to let go of the hair.

  3. Step 3

Twist both sections clockwise again, never letting go of the hair. Wrap the current right section over the left, keeping it taut. You should start to see the rope braid form.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this process, twisting clockwise and wrapping counter clockwise, until you've reached the end of the ponytail. Use another band or hair tie to secure the rope.

  5. Step 5

Practice this rope braid technique until you feel comfortable with it and hair looks good. If the braid twists around itself, you may have it too tight. If you can see space between the rope strands, you may have it too loose. Practice ensures that you learn the correct tightness for your individual hair.

  6. Step 6

Vary the rope braid by creating pigtail braids or many small rope twists. This braid takes some time to get used to making, but once you have the process down you should be able to quickly braid your hair in a new way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a friend or family member braid your hair for you if you can't do it yourself. Teach him or her to do the two strand rope braid to get the look without straining your arms.
