Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, is the oldest form of chat on the Internet. IRC doesn't require a web browser or a subscription to a specific service. Anyone who has Internet access can meet new and interesting people by using IRC. On top of this, it is easier than you think to get started with Internet Relay Chat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Download an Internet Relay Chat client. You might choose a free client like mIRC, or you might choose a client that will integrate with other messaging services, such as Trillian.
Step2
Contact your Internet Service Provider to get the correct settings for Internet relay chat. Settings can vary from one ISP to another.
Step3
Learn the Internet Relay Chat commands. There are many sites like IRC Beginner that list the commands used in IRC. While you won't know all of these commands when you get started with Internet Relay Chat, it is important to master them quickly.
Step4
Search for Internet Relay Chat channels that match your interest areas. There are channels on every topic from aquariums to Zorro and everything in between.
Step5
Join several channels until you find ones that you especially enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you see the "@" symbol in front of a person's name, it means they are a moderator for that channel.
  • Make sure you follow rules of "netiquette," such as not typing in all capital letters. This is especially important when you first get started with Internet Relay Chat, since it will help you as you meet new people.
  • Many of the emoticons and abbreviations used in instant messaging or text messaging are appropriate for IRC, as well.
