Pranksters have played jokes on April Fool's Day, or April 1st, since the late 1500s when the Charles IX and the Gregorian calendar moved New Year's Day from late March and early April to January 1st. Some refused to acknowledge the change and were labeled as fools, often the victim of harmless pranks. An unexpected shower and getting wet is certainly a way to play an April Fool's prank.
